I’ve been using Adsense since it was launched and do love it’s simplicity and effectiveness as a method for content sites to monetise. But sometimes I do get overly paranoid about following the TOS and not clicking on my own ads. It’s like when I know my parents are coming to visit and I’m sitting waiting for them, unable to have a smoke in my own house just in case they don’t approve!
It’s the same with Adsense, which is stupid. I write about what I know and I enjoy and Adsense serves contextual ads based on the content I produce. So it stands to reason that reasonably frequently I will be served adverts that I might be interested in, doesn’t it?
I feel like I’m missing out on this whole world of advertised products that are all entirely designed to be aimed at me! It’s not just on Blogged Out – I run a bunch of websites so I’m missing out on loads of stuff. It’s like I have sacrificed my consumer life to take on a Zen like life of commerical solitude just so I can provide you all compelling content – in constant fear that if a break the holy commandment, “Thou Shall Not Click”, I’ll be cast out from Google’s garden of Eden…
Google does enjoy their largely self imposed image of the parental figure. Not a mean parent though – more like the groovy, fun parents that give you the impression of freedom while at the same time guiding you in the right direction. I think I may still have to rebel though. Yes…yes…definitely need to rebel. First thing in the morning I’m heading to Googleplex with a bag of my dirty laundry. I’ll spend a few days there, get my dirty washing done and eat all their food. That’ll learn them!
